Jennifer Aniston, one of last megawatt Hollywood stars not to have her name on a fragrance, is expected to reveal shortly that she has signed a deal with the Falic Group to launch a scent, perhaps later this year.
SJP NYC is the latest release from Sarah Jessica Parker. It’s a tie-in with her upcoming movie, Sex and the City 2, and is meant to be a reflection on the fictional character Carrie Bradshaw as opposed to a reflection on Sarah Jessica Parker herself. Which works out very well for Coty, apparently, since they’ve found that Sarah Jessica Parker is not always an easy sell:
In the case of actress Sara Jessica Parker, Coty has had varied experiences. Lovely, which was easily relatable to Parker’s television persona, was a success. Covet, meanwhile, which tapped into a different side of the celebrity, proved a bigger challenge. [Catherine] Walsh explained that Coty’s next launch with Parker, SJP NYC, again focuses on the personality that the consumer wants.1
And the personality that the consumer wants, apparently, smells like strawberry. I suppose I should stop here and admit that I was never a fan of Sex and the City, although I did sit through several episodes at the urging of friends who found the show mesmerizing…
Yep. Coming to Sephora in France in May, a new fragrance for the Sex Pistols. I can’t tell you anything else about it except that it possibly involves leather — although of course I’ll update later if I find more details — but it probably doesn’t matter: you’ll either want it or you won’t. Kim Kardashian, in case you didn’t know, is a “TV star, entrepreneur, model, actress, and trendsetter”, in addition to being “one of the world’s most idolized women”. So says Sephora, where Kardashian’s eponymous debut fragrance recently launched and is reportedly a top seller.
Kardashian said she wanted “something rich and creamy and sexy, but still youthful”;1 what she got was a big white floral, very similar to the recent Mariah Carey Forever, which of course was very similar to Marc Jacobs for women. Kardashian’s effort, developed by perfumer Claude Dir, is lusher than Forever, and heavier on the tuberose…
Lawyers for Combs filed papers in Brooklyn federal court last week asking a judge to compel The Urban Glass Quarterly, based in Fort Greene, to reveal its notes about an article that suggested Comb’s fashion label, Sean John, ripped off a renowned glassblowing artist.
— Ok, remember this story from early last year? Glass artist Tom Patti said that the Sean John Unforgivable bottle was a copy of two of his glass sculptures, and he sued (see: Stolen). Now Sean Combs says the Urban Glass Quarterly came up with the whole idea. Read more at Glass Warfare at the NY Post.
You can tell the potential of a celebrity fragrance brand in its first few days in store. This is off-the-chart.
That’s Terry Lundgren, CEO of Macy’s, noting that Beyoncé’s debut fragrance, Heat, is already flying off the shelves.1Coty, who hopes that Heat will “re-energize the celebrity category”, must be thrilled.2
Heat is a warm fruity musk; it opens on lots of peach-flavored hard candy over midding-dark, nondescript florals, and is a little loud for a few minutes3 (the notes: red vanilla orchid, magnolia, neroli, blush peach, honeysuckle nectar, almond macaroon, crème de musk, sequoia milkwood, tonka bean and amber). After that, it’s softer, easier to wear, although the sweetness never dissipates more than slightly…
Beyoncé will make an appearance tomorrow, February 3, at 5 pm at Macy’s Herald Square to promote her new fragrance, Beyoncé Heat:
According to the plan, the first customers to purchase the Beyoncé Heat three-piece fragrance set for $122 will be given the chance to meet and pose for a photo with Knowles.
I’m not selling ‘John Mayer: the cologne’. If I did it would just smell like sausage and sleep. I don’t look at my fans and think, ‘Wow, they really like what I do musically. Imagine if I could get 60 more dollars out of them!’
Halle Berry’s debut fragrance, Halle by Halle Berry, was something of a love-it-or-hate-it among perfumistas, but it did well enough on the mass market shelves.1 Not surprisingly, Coty has the first flanker out in short order: Halle Pure Orchid. From the looks of things, they just took all the original publicity shots and tinted everything, including the sand and the sky, a nice pale-ish purple.
The scent follows about the same trajectory. Remember how the somewhat-difficult gourmand Covet (Sarah Jessica Parker) turned into the crowd-pleasing purple floralated flanker Covet Pure Bloom? That’s about what has happened here…
Actress Zoë Saldana will front Avon’s upcoming fragrance Eternal Magic. According to Avon, “the actress is the perfect fit for Avon’s latest scent—a fragrance embodying timeless grace, beauty and elegance…”
Despite predictions to the contrary – many have forecast a shift in the fragrance industry away from the cult of the celebrity and towards the cult of the perfumer – product sales and new launches suggest celebrity scents are still a dominant trend.
Actress Eva Longoria Parker, best known for her roles in The Young and The Restless and Desperate Housewives, will launch her debut fragrance, Eva by Eva Longoria, in April:
I have always been somewhat allergic to all perfumes and really wanted to create something that every woman could wear…
It has taken me three years to decide on the scent because I really like B.O. and I think it’s sexy. I wanted to figure out a way to make it palatable to everybody.
