Two Weeks in Review

July 11th, 2010 by admin

Hi Friends! Thank you for all of the wonderful comments, and for being so understanding of my absence from the blog during my wedding and honeymoon. Many of you have been kindly posting links in the comments to Mrs. O’s various appearances, but I thought we could all use a quick catch up of the first lady’s recent events in addition. Mrs. O debuted a few fabulous summer skirts below, which I’ll work to identify this week.

Hope everyone (in the U.S.) had a great July 4th holiday. While the wedding and honeymoon were quite magical, it’s good to be back!

July 3: The President and First Lady Mrs. O returned from Camp David, where they spent part of the July 4th weekend. Mrs. O paired a fabulous green print skirt, featuring oversize stud trim, with a white tank, metallic flats and gold accessories. Her lime green tote added a final punch of color.

Update: Thanks to the always reliable chrystelle for informing us that the skirt is Comme des Garcons. A similar version can be seen here.

July 4: On July 4th, Mrs. O wore a fittingly patriotic ensemble, pairing a red, white and blue wrap halter top with white cropped pants and ballet flats.

Update: The first lady’s top is Suno.

July 6: Mrs. O met with Mrs. Netanyahu, wife of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House. I believe the dress is the same Narciso Rodriguez tulip patterned frock that Mrs. O wore on the campaign trail in 2008, also seen on the cover of the Mandi Norwood book “Michelle Style” here.

July 7: The first lady appeared at an event at the Treasury building, where Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner spoke at the economy and 2008 financial crisis. For the event, Mrs. O paired a white top and cropped cardigan with a fabulous metallic floral skirt. A thin silver belt at the waist and magenta heels completed the look.

Long weekend hardly complete, the first lady was off again to Reno, Nevada today for an appearance at the 2010 Women’s Summit, where she spoke to a crowd of 1600 businesswomen and dignitaries.

For the appearance, Mrs. O wore a coral cotton and silk crepe dress by Narciso Rodriguez, first seen when the Os travelled to Europe last summer, seen here. A double strand of pearls completed the summer look.

Mrs. O Takes Michigan

The first lady was in Detroit, Michigan yesterday for a whirlwind visit that included a motivational speech at Wayne State University, as well as a more intimate mentoring session with students.

At Wayne State, Mrs. O’s message was one of hope:

“What I know is there is plenty of hope here. Detroit’s next chapter, America’s next chapter, is waiting to be written by you. Young people, I am asking you to embrace that opportunity, to be our future.”

And on the style front, the first lady was channeling that same energy, dressed in a optimistic pink skirt and top paired with coordinating pale pink flats.

Update: The first lady wore a peony silk cotton skirt and top by Narciso Rodriguez.

For a youth leadership and mentoring event also held at Wayne State yesterday, Mrs. O wore a printed top (possibly a dress?). Does anyone recognize it?

Smartly Dressed

The first lady attended the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. today, where she posed the final round of questions to contestants. While there, Mrs. O announced that the White House would host a Science Fair for students from around the country. The New York Times has the full scoop, here.

Style wise, the first lady turned to a minimalist grey pant suit, paired with silver ballet flats and an oversize pin at the shoulder.

Update #1: Mrs. O’s light grey silk/wool suit is a Narciso Rodriguez creation. No word quite yet on the absolutely splendid brooch.

Update #2: Mrs. O’s brooch is an Erickson Beamon creation. Fabulous!

Spring in Her Step

After a much-deserved week off for Spring Break with her daughters, Mrs. O is back to her first lady duties today, speaking at the White House Council on Women and Girls’ Forum on Workplace Flexibility. We missed you Mrs. O!

The first lady appeared at the event in a fresh spring ensemble, wearing a short-sleeve jacket and pencil skirt by Narciso Rodriguez, created from cream organza with a black ribbon jacquard weave and chiffon trim. The suit was paired with an orange camisole, beaded Moschino brooch and black kitten heels. Fresh and lovely!

Mrs. O Covers Newsweek

As many of you have noted, Mrs. O is on the cover of this week’s Newsweek, which includes an article penned by the first lady herself. “Michelle on a Mission” provides further insight into the first lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative, the ambition of which is succinctly summed up as follows:

“Let’s Move is about families making manageable changes that fit with their schedules, their budgets, and their needs and tastes. It’s about giving parents the tools they need to keep their families healthy and fit, and getting more nutritious food—more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and less sugar, fat, and salt—into our nation’s schools. It’s about helping grocery stores serve communities that don’t have access to fresh foods, and finding new ways to help our kids stay physically active in school and at home.”

For the cover, Mrs. O wears a blue, cap-sleeve, scoop-neck dress, accessorized with pearls and diamond earrings. Might this be the same Narciso Rodriguez dress that Mrs. O wore to meet the First Lady of Greece last week? Update: Indeed, it is!

Continuing to champion her cause for healthy eating, Mrs. O will deliver remarks at the Grocery Manufacturers Association Science Forum later today. Stay tuned for photos and a new post.

What a busy day for Mrs. O! Also today, the First Lady met with Mrs. Ada Papandreaou, the First Lady of Greece, in the Yellow Oval Room of the White House. For the appearance, Mrs. O changed into a vibrant blue sheath dress, accesorized with bronze heels and stacks of gold cuff bracelets.

Update: Mrs. O wears a deep royal jersey dress by Narciso Rodriguez.

A Magnolia State Visit

The first lady is in Jackson, Mississippi today, visiting Pecan Park Elementary School and Brinkley Middle School to discuss healthy eating for school children as part of her growing Let’s Move initiative. The Clarion Ledger has a full report, here.

Style wise, the first lady returned to an old classic, a banded Narciso Rodriguez jacket worn on the campaign trail in 2008, seen here. Today Mrs. O paired the jacket with slim black pants and a cropped wool pea coat. It’s fun to see how Mrs. O gets mileage from her wardrobe and transitions key pieces from season to season.

Bunch o’ limited edition collector bottles 2010, part 4

February 22nd, 2010 by admin

More limited edition collector fragrance bottles, with the usual disclaimers: in most of these cases, the juice is unchanged, just the bottle is “special” (or not, as the case may be), and some of these may not be available in the US.

Talking Fashion With Charlie Rose

February 19th, 2010 by admin

I had the pleasure today to be on “The Charlie Rose Show” with Narciso Rodriguez, Mickey Drexler, the chief executive of J. Crew, and Robbie Myers, the editor of Elle. We discussed all things fashion from our different perspectives of the industry. The show airs tonight at 11.

Narciso Rodriguez

February 17th, 2010 by admin

Narciso Rodriguez’s Fall 2010 collection, inspired by “beautiful curved lines and shadows,” offered a palette of burnt orange, grey-green and black hues, melded together with dreamy ombre effects and curved panels of muted silver sequins. As a collection, it was understandable and cohesive, strong but graceful. As style.com described it: “minimalist with firepower.”

Which of these wearable gems would you add to Mrs. O’s wardrobe?

Narciso Rodriguez for eBay

February 12th, 2010 by admin

Images by Paul Cruz

Last fall Narciso Rodriguez announced that he would introduce a new capsule collection in collaboration with eBay during 2010. A capsule collection in partnership with a retailer beyond the usual suspects of Target and H&M is quite an exciting prospect, particularly for what it might offer to a more grown-up customer.  And from the first looks above, the enthusiasm has been well-merited. The integrity of Narciso Rodriguez’s design aesthetic is alive and well in this collection, made all the more enticing by its accessible price point.

The designer says: “I am extremely excited by the possibilities that this new online sales channel brings to my business long term. For me it’s always been about dressing many women of all ages, all types, all sizes, and this special collection on eBay is a unique opportunity to reach a broad global audience.”

The eight piece limited-edition collection features Narciso Rodriguez’s clean lines and sophisticated color blocking, created in a palette of red, black and white using imported Italian fabrics. The collection will be offered in prices from $65 – $350, sizes 0 to 14, and available for purchase exclusively through the Narciso Rodriguez eBay Store.

The best news? The wait is nearly over. The Narciso Rodriguez for eBay collection debuts this Monday, February 15 at 12:00PM EST, here. Perhaps Mrs. O will be doing a bit of online shopping?

Mrs. O on Larry King Live

The first lady appeared on Larry King Live Tuesday evening, answering a series of questions on her new initiative to combat childhood obesity, health care reform and Sarah Palin.

Mrs. O wore a black cap sleeve dress with pink inset detail at the collar by Narciso Rodriguez. This is the same frock that the first lady wore for her March 2009 interview and photoshoot for Vogue, seen below.

An Inventive Remix

February 4th, 2010 by admin

Images by Jason Reed / Reuters

This morning the president and First Lady Mrs. O were joined by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero for the 58th US National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. O was dressed in a plum silk dress, paired with a long sleeve top underneath and a thin belt at the waist. This is the same Narciso Rodriguez dress Mrs. O wore to attend the president’s address to a joint session of Congress in February 2009. The notable addition for this appearance? Sleeves, of course!

Was this Mrs. O’s tongue-in-cheek, sartorial rebuttal to “sleeve-gate”? Or perhaps the first lady simply getting mileage out of her wardrobe? Would love to hear your thoughts on the 2010 remix.

Happy Birthday Mrs. O

January 16th, 2010 by admin

Image by Yuri Gripas / Reuters

Today marks the 46th birthday of First Lady Mrs. O. Mrs. O has been treated with a few celebrations over the past few days, first with White House staffers on Friday, and last evening, with the president and a group of Chicago friends. Last evening the group spent more than four hours at Nora in Washington, D.C.. Lynn Sweet has the full scoop, here. Mrs. O chose a black dress for the fete, topped by a black coat embellished with gold lattice detailing.

Update: A gold star for reader Kathryn, who reports that Mrs. O’s coat is Narciso Rodriguez, as seen here.

Below, White House staff closed the week by honoring the First Lady’s birthday on Friday. The first lady wore a watercolor print, ruffled blouse for the occasion.

A Stroll Through the Honolulu Zoo

Before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington, D.C. last evening, the first family enjoyed a tour of the Honolulu Zoo as their vacation in Hawaii came to a close. First Lady Mrs. O dressed in a vibrant blue shirt dress for the visit.

Update #1: Mrs. O wears a blue cotton poplin shirtdress from Narciso Rodriguez’s Resort 2010 collection.

Update #2: Despite mixed opinions in the comments section, I wanted to note that Vogue.com has named Mrs. O the best dressed of the week for this Narciso Rodriguez number, writing of the first lady and her best-dressed company: “It seems there is no particular dress code for these adventurous, fiercely fashionable women.” Click here for more.

Homeward Bound

The president and first lady left Oslo, Norway this morning to return to Washington, DC.

Of note is Mrs. O’s choice of suit, the camel and black Narciso Rodriguez ensemble worn during the inauguration for the “We Are One” concert. Several pieces first and last seen during the inauguration have been reintroduced in the past few days by the first lady, perhaps signaling the significance of the occasion.

Off to Oslo

The president and first lady are off to Oslo, Norway where the president will receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

For her overnight travel, Mrs. O has paired a cropped Alaia jacket (last seen in Prague) with black pants and boots. A red scarf adds a splash of color.

Landing in Oslo, Mrs. O has changed ensembles, wearing a custom-made, lavender coat by Narciso Rodriguez with a coordinating lilac scarf and purple leather gloves. This combination is the same that the first lady wore during the inauguration, for a ceremony at Arlington Cemetery.
