Bond no. 9 ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

August 14th, 2010 by admin

Bond no. 9 store exterior, New York City

Bond no. 9’s flagship boutique, at the company’s namesake address, is located on a cobble-stoned street with historic cast-iron architecture. Walking into the boutique, you may be impressed by its sheer size; in this city where real estate is an obsession, charted inch by costly inch, Bond occupies the entire first floor of the building.

Everywhere you turn in this shop, there is something colorful or glittering to see. Amphora-like dramming units are displayed on mannequin-shaped stands; refillable atomizers are arranged in the slots of a votive-candle stand salvaged from some unknown church. In addition to the more than thirty New York-inspired fragrances (most of which are Eau de Parfum), you can cast your eye (and nose) over scented body creams, candles, soaps, and limited edition bottles encrusted with Swarovski crystals…

Creed ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

July 14th, 2010 by admin

Creed boutique New York City

Madison Avenue is definitely an appropriate location for Creed, a company that consistently emphasizes its pedigree, the high standard of its products, and the exclusivity of its clientele. Within Creed’s uptown Manhattan boutique, its only freestanding location in the United States, several shiny, silvery Creed crests are embedded in the floor and in the sugar-white marble counters; a few cleverly placed mirrors reflect back the large expanses of the windows (with their view of the block’s other elite properties); and the perfumes themselves sit on backlit shelves like precisely seated guests at a formal dinner party.

Once you enter this somewhat intimidating, modernist jewel-box of a boutique, you may find that the sales assistance is unexpectedly affable and low-pressure…

A putrid jubilee

July 1st, 2010 by admin

The city Department of Environmental Protection is using a perfume-like chemical spray to mask a fetid stench likely emanating from a waste treatment plant. Officials hoped the citrus-scented spray would prevent a fireworks display in Astoria Park from turning into a putrid jubilee. — From New York using perfume spray to cover stench in Astoria, [...]

Perfume meet & greet report: Tilda Swinton at Henri Bendel

June 20th, 2010 by admin

Tilda SwintonTester bottle, Tilda Swinton Like This

Like This, the fragrance collaboration between actor Tilda Swinton and niche perfume house Etat Libre d’Orange, recently launched in the United States. Etat Libre’s founder, Etienne de Swardt, made appearances at New London Pharmacy and Henri Bendel to introduce the fragrance and to reveal more facts about Like This; for example, its “code name” as a work-in-progress was “Immortal Ginger.” And the final name, in addition to being borrowed from a poem by Rumi, is a bit of wordplay on Tilda Swinton’s request for a “cozy” scent, since the sound-alike Italian word “così” translates as “like this.”

Tilda Swinton herself made a visit to Henri Bendel on June 17. I was able to speak with her for a few precious minutes…

Fresh ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

May 7th, 2010 by admin

Fresh boutique in Soho

Fresh, with its neatly focused line of products and simple-but-sophisticated visual style, has offered an upscale alternative to The Body Shop and Bath & Body Works since the early 1990s. Fresh’s flagship boutique in SoHo looks almost clinical at first glance, but its tiled floor and white shelves create a neutral background for Fresh’s meticulous product displays and understatedly decorative packaging. In keeping with the company’s clean, streamlined style, most of Fresh’s Eau de Parfums are composed around fruit and/or foliage notes, and many of them could be worn by either men or women. A handful of the fragrances are also available in smaller sizes, packaged in refillable, one-ounce bottles; and many of them can be layered with matching shower gels and body lotions…

Frederic Malle Editions de Parfums ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

March 16th, 2010 by admin

Frederic Malle shop window

Stepping into the Frédéric Malle Editions de Parfums boutique, you might think that you’ve mistakenly opened the door to a Madison Avenue living room or an upscale art gallery, rather than a retail venue. The carpeted space is punctuated by a French Art Deco desk and armchairs, wood carvings from Africa, a drawing by Picasso, contemporary landscape paintings, and a framed photograph of the writer Charles Baudelaire. Sage-green velvet drapes soften the corners of the room, and folding wooden panels screen off the view and the noise of the street beyond the windows.

After a moment, however, you’ll notice all the signature elements of the Editions de Parfums style. Instead of bookcases filled with first editions, there are shelves of richly scented products arranged by “title.” The wall above the fireplace is hung with photographs of the fragrances’ perfumers, and a sleek, refrigerated cabinet stores and displays the eighteen fragrances in the Editions de Parfums collection…

Aedes de Venustas ~ shopping for perfume in New York City

December 12th, 2009 by admin

Aedes de Venustas, store interior

It’s hard to find something to say about Aedes de Venustas that hasn’t been said many times before. Ever since this West Village business opened in 1995, it has been the subject of countless glowing reviews that heap praise upon its merchandise, its décor, its customer service, its discerning clientele, and its indefinable mystique. The thing is, Aedes actually deserves all the accolades it has received over the years. Its selection of high-quality fragrances includes full lines (Serge Lutens, Etro, Diptyque) and one-offs (such as Shalini or the signature scent of the Hotel Costes), as well as brands that you won’t find anywhere else in New York (Amouage). Its extensive assortment of home fragrance and scented body-care features products that have gained places in the “cult favorite” hall of fame: Claus Porto soaps, Agraria potpourri, Mariage Frères candles.

The boutique’s décor is detailed and lavish: antique glass-front cabinets, chandeliers, Victorian sofas, and a stuffed peacock or two…
